HOW TO GET RID OF MOLD
As
a
Marine
Surveyor
in
business
with
my
own
company
since
1969,
I
have
personally
surveyed
thousands
of
vessels
of
every
possible
description.
Mold
and
mildew
has
been
rampant.
Why?
Because
of
water
leaks
and
dampness.
Everyone
wants
to
know
how
to
get
rid
of
mold.
I
always
reply,
“Fix
the
water
leaks
and
provide
adequate
ventilation,”
as
mold
cannot
colonize
without
moisture.
On
wooden
vessels
or
structures,
crop
out
(remove)
any
area
of
Poria
Incrassata
or
Merulis
Lacrymans
(dry
rot),
as
it
is
a
fungal
spore
that
cohabitates
with
microbic
fungi
that
are
just
waiting
for
the
right
conditions
for
growth
in
every
structure.
How
to
get
rid
of
mold?
It
depends
how
much
mold,
what
concentrations,
and
what
species?
Always
be
mindful
that
there
are
over
100,000
species
of
mold
that
have
been
around
for
centuries
that
are
not
thought
of
to
be
harmful.
If
we
have
large,
concentrated
areas
over
four
square
feet
of
black
mold
and
an
offensive
musty
olfactory
odor,
we
must
take
action
immediately
to
prevent
further
colonization
of
this
microbic
infestation.
What
is
the
species?
If
it
is
Stachybotrys
Chartarum
that
is
considered
by
most
toxicologists
to
be
a
very
dangerous
mold,
it
can
present
problems
to
persons
with
pulmonary
problems,
respiratory
disorders,
weakened
immune
systems,
pregnant
women,
and
children.
There
never
should
be
any
of
the
species
whatsoever
colonizing
in
a
household.
This
is
definitely
a
job
for
a
qualified
abatement
establishment
with
a
proven
track
record
of
passing
clearance
testing.
Our
company
provides
oversight
and
supervises
the
proper
removal
of
contaminated
substances
and
also
sees
to
it
that
all
applicable
laws
for
removal
and
disposal
are
properly
addresses.
For
example,
if
the
house
was
built
before
1978
and
you
want
to
know
how
to
get
rid
of
the
mold,
you
must
also
address
how
to
accomplish
this
without
disturbing
the
possible
lead-based
paint
or
asbestos.
There
must
be
certified
people
on
site
to
monitor
these
issues.
Interim
treatment
with
Sporicidin®
Germicidal
Disinfectant
Solution,
a
bactericide
used
in
hospitals,
is
very
effective
at
stabilizing
microbic
colonization
while
the
grave
material
is
being
removed.
Shortwave
253.7
Nanometer
ultraviolet
lights
can
be
placed
in
the
removal
areas
and
germicidal
foggers
can
be
used
for
fogging
inside
the
wall
cavities.
How
to
get
rid
of
mold
is
to
check
with
your
local
regulatory
authorities
in
California.
At
this
time,
we
have
no
existing
laws
that
require
any
type
of
special
handling
of
any
type
of
mold-contaminated
debris.
That
is,
unless
of
course
other
issues
such
as
asbestos
containing
material,
lead-based
paint,
or
dust
are
commingled
with
the
microbic
infestation.
Before
we
contemplate
how
to
get
rid
of
mold
we
must
confront
and
address
these
and
other
environmental
issues.
